Yesterday, I went to the Home Depot to purchase a new dishwasher. My last dishwasher had the electronic touch-pad controls and they wore out in less than three years. Still, there is almost no alternative on the new machines.
After making my selection, the salesgirl and I were chatting as we went through the payment process. Somehow we got on the topic of blogging. Because she was interested in blogging, I began to tell her of my recent experiences exploring blogging as part of my reinvention process.
We quickly discovered a connection, in that both of us are writers. She has written numerous short stories and parts of three novels, but, like me, has not yet been published.
She explained that her varied schedule at Home Depot meant that she could seldom attend the local writer’s group meetings.
Before I knew it, we were talking about the recent MothUp, Hollis Gillespie, the May Writer’s Conference sponsored by Atlanta Writer’s Club, and Chris Guillebeau’s recent article in Writer’s Digest. She had read it too.
I think the point of all this is that when you strongly connect with an idea or a goal, others who share that interest are attracted to you.
Both of these principles, connection and attraction, are cornerstones of the philosophy of coaching.
I hope that some of the information I was able to share with this young woman helps her along her way. I was certainly impressed by her output, and I would love the opportunity to get to know her and support one another in our writing.
Perhaps she will visit this blog and comment on this post.

Hi Dianne,
As I sat down at my desk this evening, I found the small white square of paper I had folded and placed into my pocket yesterday. Delight! It is true. When people have a true passion for something, and find others who share that, this commonality acts as a magnet. I truly appreciate you sharing your experiences and resources. I would like to keep in touch. I have yet to thoroughly explore your blog and novel website. I’m looking forward to it.
Please come to our next MothUP (and throw your name in the hat): Mon., March 22 at 7 p.m. at Manuel’s, 602 N. Highland. Theme: tradition. We got a bigger room this time!
And Hollis has agreed to tell a story.
That will be cool! Hollis is very funny.
