Diane:
Thank you for posting an excellent history of the Fredonia community. I have roots in that area as well–my Great, Great, Great Grandfather was Alfred F. Zachry. If you can connect me with Aalja Boyd, I’ll be glad to tell her what I know about him. Also, if you have any more historical information that might be of interest, please share.
Thanks,
Al

Al, thanks so much. I sent a message to Aalja suggesting she join the blog as a contributor and I am going to suggest the same to you because we can all add valuable info about this area of Alabama and our relatives. Otherwise, with your permission I will give her your hotmail address.

I have a photo of my Grandfather whose name was Benjamin James and who was called Uncle Benny in our family. I’ll post it when I get a minute. He raised his ten children in a tenant house on your property and was very much loved by all of them. When his oldest daughter married into the Wilkinson family, the matriarch of that family was very annoyed, since she considered my grandmother beneath the rest of them. Eventually when she died, my grandmother became mistress of their home on the Fredonia Road, until the family lost the place during the depression.

Al, I am slowly moving my genealogy ’stories’ over into this wordpress blog. I moved one of the Fredonia stories today, so if you want to add comments there, you can.

Hi Diane, I was doing family reasearch for the genelogy program on ancestory.com. I found my great grandfather voters registration card. His name was Alfred Anderson and he worked for Mr. Alfred Zachery who is listed in you ancestory article from Freedonia, Alabama. I was also surpise to see that Alfred Anderson home address was listed as West Point, GA, where I believe Alfred Zackery moved his business to. I believe my great grandfather name his son and my father after this man. I would love to find out more information.

The Zachary Brothers owned lots of cotton land in Chambers County. My great grandfather was an overseer for them – this was AFTER the Civil War. The Troup County Archives have a good website where you can search by name and there is a Valley Historical Society that covers the Alabama side. You can also look up Zacharys on the Chambers County genweb site. Good luck! Your great grandfather and mine may have even known each other.
